GIS Training and Technical Advice for the Integration of Statistical and Geospatial Information

Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)
January 2022 - December 2022 (Trainings)
August 2023 - until today (Technical Advice)

This project is part of the component of integration of statistical and geospatial information in accordance with the recommendations of the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework (GSGF) and the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework (IGIF).

The main tasks developed are aimed at:
• To train technical staff working in the Statistical Institutes and National Geographic Institutes of different Latin American countries.
• Generation of methodological resources.
• Preparation of inputs.
• Assistance in the execution of workshops and interviews.
• Preparation of reports and a roadmap for each of the countries participating in the project: Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Paraguay and the Dominican Republic.

In this regard, a series of training sessions have been designed and delivered to the technical staff of the different national institutions participating in the project, focusing on Geographic Information Systems, with the following courses being delivered:
GIS I
Georeferencing and Geocoding
GIS II
Geospatial Standards
Satellite Images
Web Mapping

Furthermore, once the training sessions were completed, national diagnostic documents were prepared on the topics of statistical and geospatial data, technological support, institutional agreements, common geographies, geocoding and standards, policies and good practices.

Through these different tools (training, workshop attendance, preparation and conducting of interviews) it was possible to document the current status and the steps to follow on the path towards the integration of statistical and geospatial information from each of the participating countries.
